Full Driveway Replacement After Frost Heave Damage

An Eldersburg homeowner called Ace Paving in early spring after noticing significant upheaval in multiple sections of the driveway following a particularly harsh winter. Several panels had lifted and shifted, creating dangerous uneven edges and cracks wide enough to catch a heel.

Challenges

The heaving was caused by inadequate base depth in the original installation — water had been freezing under the asphalt and lifting it repeatedly over several winters. Simply resurfacing wasn’t an option because the base itself had been compromised. The whole driveway needed to come out and be rebuilt properly.

Solution

Ace Paving removed the existing asphalt and excavated to proper depth. A fresh, compacted gravel base was installed to prevent future freeze issues, and the new asphalt was laid in the correct thickness for residential use in Maryland’s climate. Edges were cut clean and finished flush with the apron.

Results

The following winter came and went without any movement in the new surface. The homeowner said it was the first spring in years they didn’t come outside to find new damage. The driveway was level, safe, and structurally sound.
